Who controls the 529 account once I open it?

The account owner maintains control over the management and disbursement of assets in the account. Only the owner can request account changes or withdrawals. Unlike a custodial (UGMA/UTMA) account, the beneficiary does not automatically gain control of the account unless he or she is also the account owner.
