Using a debit card outside of the U.S.

Note: This support article only applies to Individual and Joint Cash Accounts with checking features

Overview

Your Wealthfront debit card should work in most countries, as long as they accept Visa. If you're traveling outside of the U.S. and plan to use your card, keep in mind:

• You’ll pay fees

International ATM withdrawals: You’ll pay $2.50, the ATM owner fee, and an international transaction fee of 2.75%. Learn more

International purchases: You’ll pay a foreign transaction fee of 2.75%. Learn more

If a transaction is in a currency other than U.S. dollars, or the merchant or ATM is located outside the U.S., you'll pay an international transaction fee of 2.75%. This happens even if the international purchase or ATM withdrawal is in U.S. dollars, or if you make the international purchase remotely from the U.S.

• Fraud monitoring is stricter

For your security, international transactions are more likely to be declined than those in the U.S. This is especially true for card swipes. To increase the chances of a successful purchase, insert the chip portion of your card into the terminal whenever possible.
