Why do I have to update my account links?

Earlier this year, we began updating the way we connect to your linked accounts by moving to a new data provider, Plaid. If you have accounts currently linked to Wealthfront, you will begin seeing a prompt asking you to update the link/links to complete this transition.

Why do I need to update my links?

Updating your links will ensure we can continue displaying up-to-date balance and transaction information for linked accounts, while avoiding interruption for functionality that relies on these connections, such as Automated Savings Plans.

How do I update my connection?

After logging into our app or website, you should either see a prompt to Reconnect a specific external account to update the link.

Once you have successfully re-linked an account through Plaid, you should no longer see a prompt to reconnect that account.

If I don’t update my connection, will my transfers and plans be impacted?

  • For most institutions, one-time and recurring transfers will continue to be available without needing to update the connection to an account. However, transfers to/from certain institutions Chase, U.S. Bank, and PNC may not work without updating the connection, due to the unique manner in which these institutions provide account information.
  • If you have an Automated Savings Plan set up to monitor an external account, your connection will eventually expire. To avoid interruptions, update your link as soon as possible. Once updated, if the plan is not resumed automatically, you can manually restart it by going to Transfer money > selecting Automated Savings is paused, and following the prompts.

What if I don’t want to update my links?

If you prefer not to update your links, you can remove the existing connection by:

  1. Selecting the account from your Dashboard
  2. From our website, you should then see an option to Remove this institution. On mobile, select Manage in the top right, then scroll down to Remove institution.

Please also be aware that transfer relationships are managed independently of the Dashboard link. If you have used an account for transfers in the past, and wish to remove the transfer relationship, you can:

  1. Select your name in the top corner of our website
  2. Select Settings
  3. Under the list of My Accounts under settings, select your Wealthfront account name
  4. Scroll down to Bank accounts enabled for transfer and remove the transfer relationships as necessary

What if I’m running into an error when updating the link?

If you’re running into an error during the linking process, please review our common troubleshooting tips in this FAQ. If you’re unable to resolve the errors, please reach out to support@wealthfront.com so that our team can review.
