How can I use Wealthfront’s MCP server with an AI app?
Wealthfront’s MCP server is an optional feature for clients who already use AI platforms to ask everyday money questions.
After connecting, you can ask questions about your Wealthfront accounts’ balances, investments, cost basis, and target allocations without manually copying that information into a conversation.
Connecting to an AI app is entirely your choice. Wealthfront won’t share account information unless you set up a connection and authorize access.
What is the MCP server?
Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets AI apps connect to other services and request information.
Wealthfront’s MCP server lets you connect compatible AI apps to your Wealthfront accounts. When you ask about your accounts, the AI app can securely request supported data from Wealthfront and use it in its response.
Compatible apps currently include ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Cursor, and Grok.
How do I connect my accounts to an AI app?
Go to Wealthfront’s Connect to an AI platform page, choose the app you want to connect to, and follow the instructions provided for that app.
The apps currently supported are ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Cursor and Grok.
As part of the connection, you’ll return to Wealthfront to:
- Sign in securely.
- Complete two-factor authentication when required.
- Review the requested access.
- Select Allow access to connect or Deny to cancel.
What can I do after connecting to an AI app?
After you authorize a connection, the app can look up:
- Your Wealthfront accounts and balances
- Current investment holdings in supported account types
- Cost-basis information for investments you currently hold
- Current and target allocation weights
You can ask questions such as
- What is the current balance of each of my Wealthfront accounts?
- How is my portfolio currently allocated?
- Am I concentrated in a particular investment at this point in time?
- Which current holdings have the largest estimated unrealized gains or losses?
If you have an Automated Investing Account with customized target weights, the app can also help prepare a proposed change based on your instructions to investments already in your portfolio. You must review and approve the proposal in Wealthfront before it takes effect. Learn how to prepare a portfolio change using an AI platform.
Wealthfront’s MCP can’t be used to make other changes to your accounts such as selecting new investments, opening accounts, or transferring or withdrawing money.
An AI app can’t make changes to your Wealthfront accounts. It can only prepare a draft proposal which can then be reviewed and accepted by you in Wealthfront.
What information will Wealthfront’s MCP server never share with a connected AI app?
Wealthfront’s MCP will never share your Wealthfront credentials or personal identity information such as:
- Social Security number
- Address and date of birth
- Employer, job title, or income
- Wealthfront username and password
What information isn’t currently available?
Transaction history isn’t available yet, but we’re working to add it soon.
Wealthfront’s MCP also doesn’t currently provide:
- Accounts linked from other financial institutions
- Tax-Loss Harvesting details
- Information about investments you’ve sold
- Realized gains or losses
We may expand the available information as we learn how clients use the MCP.
Will the connected AI platform use my information to train its models?
Whether your information is used for model training depends on the AI app you connect to. Check your connected AI platform’s Security or Data controls for an option to turn off model training or model improvement.
How do I disconnect an AI app?
In Wealthfront, go to Settings > Security > Connected apps. Find the app and revoke its access.
After you disconnect, the app can’t look up new information from Wealthfront on your behalf. The AI app may retain information it received before disconnecting, subject to its settings, terms, and privacy policy.
Will anything change if I don’t connect?
No. Your Wealthfront accounts and experience will remain unchanged. Nothing is shared with the AI platform unless you create and authorize a connection.
Can an AI app make mistakes?
Yes. AI platforms can misunderstand your question or provide incomplete or inaccurate information.
Responses generated by an AI platform aren’t personalized financial, legal, or tax advice from Wealthfront.
