Why are we updating the Stock Investing Account’s legal structure?

In October 2026, we’ll be updating the legal structure of our Stock Investing Accounts in order to offer the following features:

  • Instant trading
  • Recurring investments
  • Limit orders
  • Share-based orders
  • 8,000+ additional stocks and ETFs

These features are highly requested, but aren’t possible while the account is offered through Wealthfront Advisers. In order to access these features, clients with a Stock Investing Account will need to accept this update.

What is the legal structure getting updated to?

Before this update, Stock Investing Accounts were offered through Wealthfront Advisers. Starting in October 2026, they will be offered directly through Wealthfront Brokerage.

What does this update change?

Essentially, it gives clients more control over their trading decisions and limits the role of Wealthfront Advisers. Under the previous legal structure, Clients with a Stock Investing Account would request trades, and Wealthfront Advisers would evaluate and submit those trades to Wealthfront Brokerage on their behalf.

Under the new legal structure, clients will submit trades directly to Wealthfront Brokerage. Wealthfront Advisers will no longer assess this account's risk tolerance or require a minimum number of holdings. Instead, its role will be limited to proxy voting where it will continue to vote on the client’s behalf unless they choose to vote on their own.

FAQs

When will these new features become available?

Clients that accept the update will be able to make recurring investments right away. The remaining features will be added as they’re released, starting in October.

What if the update isn’t accepted?

Clients that don’t accept the update won’t get access to recurring investments or the other features we’re introducing under our new legal structure. In addition, we won’t be able to support accounts that haven’t completed this transition so we will eventually require clients to transfer their holdings elsewhere. We'll provide plenty of notice before anything needs to be done.

Will this account continue to be free?

Yes! Free with zero commissions on trades.

The Stock Investing Account is a limited-discretion investment product offered by Wealthfront Advisers LLC (“Wealthfront Advisers”). Upon conversion—which occurs in October 2026 for agreements accepted beforehand, or immediately upon acceptance for agreements signed thereafter—the account transitions to the Brokerage Account, a self-directed brokerage product offered by Wealthfront Brokerage LLC ("Wealthfront Brokerage"), a Member of FINRA/SIPC. Wealthfront Brokerage does not provide investment recommendations in connection with the Stock Investing Account and clients are responsible for investment decisions and ongoing review and monitoring of investments within the account once their account conversion is completed.
