How do I adjust my Automated Investing Account’s target weights using Wealthfront’s MCP?

If you’ve opted in to connect your Wealthfront accounts to a compatible AI platform, you can use the AI app to propose new target weights based on your instructions for your Automated Investing Account. During this process, you’ll be redirected to Wealthfront to review and approve any changes before we update your target allocation.

Note: This is available only for Automated Investing Accounts that already have custom portfolio allocations.

What is the MCP server?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets AI apps connect to other services and request information.

Wealthfront’s MCP server lets you connect compatible AI apps to your Wealthfront accounts. When you ask about your accounts, the AI app can securely request supported data from Wealthfront and use it in its response.

Compatible apps currently include ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Cursor, and Grok.

How do I adjust my target weights?

  1. In the connected AI app, describe how you’d like to change your target weights. You can change the weights of investments already in your portfolio, but you can’t add new investments.
  2. When the proposed weights look right, use the app to create a draft in Wealthfront and open the secure link.
  3. In Wealthfront, review the target allocation proposal. You can edit or discard it.
  4. Review the disclosures and select Acknowledge and update to approve the changes.

Can my target allocation be updated without my approval?

No. Your proposed changes remain a draft until you select Acknowledge and update in Wealthfront. Working on a proposal in an AI platform has no effect on your account until you submit it in Wealthfront and approve the changes.

Can I add new investments to my custom AIA portfolio through Wealthfront’s MCP?

No. You can change only the weights of investments already in your portfolio. To add or select an investment, log in to Wealthfront, go to your account page, and select Edit portfolio. Note that, if you add a new investment to your portfolio, we may begin rebalancing your account to incorporate the investment prior to you returning to your AI app. Learn more about customizing your Automated Investing Account portfolio.

What should I consider before changing my allocation?

Changing your allocation can affect your diversification, risk, and potential tax outcomes. Before approving a change, review your full allocation and the applicable disclosures in Wealthfront. Consider whether the new allocation fits your goals and long-term plan.

AI platforms can make mistakes, and the information they provide isn’t investment or tax advice from Wealthfront. Content generated by AI platforms may be inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated. You should review all information before relying on it.

What happens after I approve a change?

We’ll start moving your account toward your new target allocation. If you choose a tax-sensitive transition, this may take some time because our software aims to buy and sell in a way that helps minimize taxes. Your actual holdings may differ from your target weights during the transition. Learn more about what happens when you change your allocation.

Can I edit or discard a draft in Wealthfront?

Yes. Once a draft appears in Wealthfront, you can edit or discard a draft before approving it. Discarding a draft won’t affect your target allocation.

Can I view detailed cost-basis information?

You can use a connected AI app to view cost-basis information for investments you currently hold and estimate unrealized gains or losses. Information about previous investments you’ve sold and realized gains or losses isn’t available.

The data shared is for informational purposes only and isn’t investment or tax advice. Your statements, trade confirmations, and tax documents from Wealthfront remain the official records.

Can I use Wealthfront’s MCP to make any other changes to my accounts?

Not at this time. Wealthfront MCP can’t be used to select new investments, open accounts, or transfer or withdraw money.

How do I disconnect an AI app?

In Wealthfront, go to Settings > Security > Connected apps. Find the app and revoke its access.

After you disconnect, the app can’t look up new information from Wealthfront on your behalf. The AI platform may retain information it received before disconnection, subject to its settings, terms, and privacy policy.

Disconnecting won’t reverse a target allocation change you already approved.
